What is Umrah?
Umrah is a pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah & Madina. Although It’s shorter than Hajj, it's still very important. Performing Umrah is a way to increase your Iman & Seek Allah’s Hasanat (Good Deeds)
The 4 Important Rites of Umrah
There are 4 important acts you must do when performing Umrah.
2 of these acts are Fard (obligatory). The other 2 acts are Wajibat (essential).
2. Performing Tawaf [Fard]
What is Tawaf?
Tawaf is walking around the Kaaba 7 times. This is one of the most important parts of Umrah. You must start from the Black Stone (Hajr al-Aswad) and circle the Kaaba counter-clockwise.What to recite during Tawaf:
There are many duas you can recite during Tawaf. A common dua you can recite is: "SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar"
Completing Tawaf is a Fard act, meaning it is absolutely necessary for your Umrah to be complete.
3. Performing Sa’ey Between Safa and Marwah [Wajibat]
What is Sa’ey?
Sa’ey means walking between the 2 hills of Safa and Marwah. This act remembers Hajar, the wife of Prophet Ibrahim, who searched for water for her son Ismail. How to do Sa’ey:
You must walk back and forth between Safa and Marwah 7 times. This is a Wajibat act, meaning it is very important and must be completed.Dua during Sa’ey:
There is no specific dua required, but you can make personal prayers as you walk.
4. Shaving the Head (for Men) or Cutting Hair Short (for Women) [Wajibat]
What is Halq and Taqsir?
After finishing Tawaf and Sa’ey, men must shave their heads completely (Halq) or cut their hair short (Taqsir). Women are only required to cut a small portion of their hair. Why is this important?
This step marks the end of the Umrah rituals, and you can now leave the state of Ihram.
1. Having Ihram at Meeqat [Fard]
What is Ihram?
Ihram is the special state of purity that you enter before starting Umrah. For men, it means wearing two white cloths. Women wear modest clothes that cover their body.Where do you enter Ihram?
You enter Ihram at Meeqat, which is a special place outside Makkah. Before crossing the Meeqat boundary, you must put on the Ihram clothes and make your intention to perform Umrah. How do you make the intention?
You make the intention by reciting the Talbiyah:"Labbaik, Allahumma Labbaik Labbaika La Sharika Laka Labbaik"
After reciting Talbiyah, you are now in the state of Ihram and must follow the rules of Ihram, such as not cutting your nails or using perfume.
